Salt and Light Works, aka Salt + Light, has a mission to cultivate community through dignified homes, jobs, and healing to lift the chronically homeless off the streets of Tulare County.

When the family fails, we believe community steps in.” Our outreach program delivers both hot and cold meals to our friends and neighbors surviving on the streets of Tulare County, as well as, some essential items. This outreach happens weekly, Tuesday through Thursday, covering both Tulare and Visalia. We can’t do this work without YOU! We always need volunteers. There are different types of opportunities, many involving the food truck and preparing and delivering food to our homeless neighbors.

In addition, volunteers are needed for administrative work, special events, community cultivators and more!

Volunteer: Join the Red Cross Disaster Action Team!

In the Central Valley, the Red Cross responds to nearly three home fires A DAY. That’s three families a day that have nowhere to go. You can be the person they turn to when they have lost everything. We need people like you to join our team!

Join us to answer the call when your neighbors need help

Most of the 60,000 emergencies that the Red Cross responds to each year are local, personal disasters like home fires. They may not make the news, but we know they are just as devastating to the families affected. Trained and available, Disaster Action Team volunteers are ready to respond to these emergencies, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. From offering a shoulder to cry on, to meeting any immediate needs for shelter or supplies, to connecting people with long term recovery services, our volunteers ensure that families don’t have to face tough times alone.

Disaster Action Team volunteers help local families cope with emergencies.

The Disaster Action Team (DAT) serves as the first, on-the-scene, Red Cross contact at the site of a disaster. While not considered first responders in the technical sense, DAT members are typically the first people at a disaster scene who provide comfort and direct assistance to help those who have been affected as they begin the recovery process. When disaster strikes, DAT members are generally dispatched in teams of two to three people: an experienced DAT Responder and one or more DAT members in training.

Ready to Make a Difference? Here's How to Get Started! Go to redcross.org/volunteer to complete our online application. It takes less than 10 minutes! A member of our team will get in touch. Taking the time for a personal conversation enables us to match you with a role that will be both meaningful and enjoyable. We’ll provide all necessary training to ensure you can be successful in your volunteer role.

Volunteer: ReStore Visalia Volnuteer

Visalia ReStore volunteers are an important part of Habitat's mission to bring people together to build community, homes and hope in Tulare & Kings Counties.  Volunteers assist in a variety of ways including, but not limited to, customer service, inventory, receiving donations, assembling donated furniture, displaying and organizing donations, and helping all who leave the ReStore have a great experience!  This means there is something for everyone!  If you have a special skill or interest, let us know - there may be a way for you to use it!

Have some questions about getting involved?  We have answers!

Are there any age requirements? Volunteers 16 and 17 years old can volunteer with an adult and we need a waiver signed by a parent/guardian.

Are there any physical requirements? Since there are a variety of ways to help, physical requirements depend on the task. There are tasks that do not require heavy lifting or high exertion. Unloading/loading donations or purchases should only be completed by volunteers comfortable lifting 50 lbs. Volunteers can expect working in outdoor temperatures, depending on location and task. Tasks vary between active and sedentary and will depend on individual volunteer capabilities and customer/donor flow.  If you are concerned about physical limitations, please contact Anita at programasst@hfhtkc.ort to make sure the opportunity is right for you!

What should I wear? We require volunteers to wear closed-toe shoes and no tank tops for your safety and comfort. We recommend wearing durable shorts or pants, as well as dressing for outdoor temperatures.

Do I need any special skills or experience? No experience required! Staff and volunteers will be there to show you the ropes. All we ask is you come with a friendly and positive attitude and willingness to learn!  If you have special skills you want to use, let us know!

Who will I work with? Volunteers will work directly with ReStore staff and volunteers.

What is my time commitment? Your shift is scheduled to start either at 9am and end at 1pm or 1pm and end at 5pm.  While we prefer you volunteer for the entire shift, we understand everybody's schedule is different; if you have concerns with your shift time, please contact Anita at programasst@hfhtkc.org after registering to request flexible start or end time!  You can sign up for one shift, all day, or multiple days!

What days / times can I volunteer? You can volunteer at the ReStore Monday - Friday between 9am and 5pm and Saturday between 9am and 4pm. We ask that you schedule a block of time
